SARAH MARGARET LAWLESS, (1), third daughter of John and Margaret (Skirvin) Lawless, was born in Grant County, Kentucky, on November 22, 1831. She came to Adams County, Illinois, in 1835. She was educated in the country schools, and on February 25, 1852, was married to Joseph Lummis. He was born March 7, 1829 in Adams County to John and Ann Lummis. Sarah was unusually fond of flowers, birds, and animals. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for fifty years, and received and read the church paper, THE ADVOCATE, all of these years. Ministers always found a cordial welcome at her home. She died on October 4, 1921, and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Adams County, Illinois. Joseph died on June 22, 1904, at their home in Paloma. They had ten children: Margaret Ann, John Edwin, Henry Francis, James Pettit, Mary Luella, Sarah Emma, John Lawless, Joseph Howard, Lillie Florence, and Elmer.
