In 1927, when the first volume of the Lawless History was published, James Sanford Lawless was the only living child of John and Margaret Skirvin Lawless.

JAMES SANFORD LAWLESS, (1), fifth son of John and Margaret (Skirvin) Lawless, was born in Gilmer Township on July 28, 1838. He was married to Clara Viola Ferguson on December 28, 1872, at Burton, Illinois. (His brother, Thomas T. Lawless, had married Ann Ferguson, a sister of Clara Ferguson, just two days earlier.) Clara was born in 1851 to John and Emily Pollock Ferguson of Ohio. James spent his entire life in Gilmer Township on the fine farm which has since become Quincy Municipal Airport. In politics he was a Republican. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Both he and his wife died in 1928 – he, on August 16; and she, on December 1. They were buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. They had eight children: James Clay, an infant son who died, Mary Berdena, Emmett, Emily Margaret, Steven Garret, Henry Harrison, and Homer Lee.
